If pistons were holed or melted I think it have a bit more than a "knock". But your borescope should tell the tale about that. If the pistons look whole, and if you can turn the engine by hand, then I'd do:
- do a compression test on each cylinder and record the numbers.
If the results look reasonable (for an older, worn engine) I see no real harm in starting her up. Once started you might be able to figure out if its a bearing knock or a valve tap or what.
You wont throw a rod since there are no rods in this engine :-)
But I get the concern about oil pressure. it might be wise to tap in with a mechanical oil pressure gauge before starting it.
Other diagnostic steps that come to mind:
- pull valve cover, it's a very quick and easy check. The problem with this check is that if you see no sludge, you don't really know anything. However if you *do* see sludge this high up in the engine you *know* the engine is sludged badly and suffering from it.
- So if you found no sludge at the time of the engine, drop the pan. This is a bigger job. Surely there will be some sludge but you can assess the situation accurately. Clean the pan and the screen
At that point start her up. if you still have an engine knock you can decide where to go from there. rebuild, junkyard engine, etc.
