Thoughts on insurance coverage Posted by Mike Keller [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I'm trying to decide whether to keep insuring my 9-5s for collision and comprehensive. Actually, I'm currently only insuring one of the 2, and mostly feel like I should be consistent! Of course I still maintain the state-mandated liability insurance. Glass is not covered no matter what I do.
One car is a 2000 9-5 linear manual wagon w/165k miles, the other a 2003 9-5 linear manual sedan w/150k. Mechanically they are impeccable, but both are afflicted with dogleg rust and to an adjuster might look a little ragtag. My deductible is $500, and each car is possibly only worth....what? Less than $1500? I'm not sure what USAA would value them at and wonder if they might be totaled (in the insurance world) if I so much as crack a headlight assembly . It was amusing to go online and realize there's not even enough data for online sites to value them. I wonder what USAA would come up with.
As a side note, I'm a little gun shy to remove it completely because I did that once for an aging Volvo wagon we owned, thinking that over a few year's time we would have a positive ROI on that decision, only to total it the next week.
Collision and comprehensive probably costs me $300 year. Another side note is that our teenage son is about to get his license, which not only increases our premium but also the possibility of a scrape with the car.
What does everyone else do?
