I have a 2004 Arc, and in June, a week or two after having my A/C compressor replaced, the belt shredded on me while out of town. The garage I was towed to was hesitant about only replacing the belt, as "there has to be a reason the belt failed", but couldn't find any obvious reason. Belt was replaced, and I've put several thousand miles on since without issue. My personal theory is that when the compressor was replaced, the belt was installed a groove or two out of straight, and the flexing and side wear took their toll.
