I have a 17 yr old.. 2001 myself.. with 253k miles on it.. and I've been researching/looking on and off for the past 2 yrs.. lol!
Honestly, if you're not in a position to DIY the repairs.. then you need to consider the big ticket items that are likely to come up, if they haven't already .. in the past years... Fuel pump, water pump, clutch/auto tran rebuild, turbo, struts, radiator, alternator, starter, exhaust system, throttle body...
if you're comfortable with those.. and assuming the engine is in good shape (ie. not burning oil, good compression) then you have to weigh in the other less expensive items.. that are likely to crop up .. DIC, CPS Sensor, other misc. sensors (o2, coolant sensor, MAF, etc.), misc fluid leaks on seals, HVAC system (broken linkages, stepping motors, etc.), various coolant hoses, vacuum leaks/repairs, AC compressor/leaks, window rollers, rear trunk wire harness, etc..
tough decision for sure.. but the bottom line is .. you have to weigh the yearly expenses you'll be hit with to maintain the car, and the inconvenience of dealing with it when it does break down.. versus the cost of a new/replacement car.. (while also factoring in the emotion of letting go )
