The fluid for the Aisin 5 speed a/t was specially developed by Esso to deal with the slipping torque converter clutch function. They named it t-4, strikingly similar to Toyota's nomenclature: "T-IV." After Exxon and Mobil merged, the responsibility for lubricants kind of fell to Mobil, and the Esso nomenclature was incompatible with Mobil's internal designation, which apparently is a four digit number. Mobil renamed it "3309" which certainly has a meaning other than the obvious one (there were 3308 different lubricants prior to this one?), but maybe not. Anyway, by the time Saab and Volvo and anyone else started using the Aisin 5 speed, Mobil was delivering the fluid. Meanwhile, Toyota had already ordered a gazillion bottles with T-IV on the front...
