Dave, you forget to tell bobc what you saw in the Haynes manual. To paraphrase, if the ECU detects a fault, it shuts down the ABS unit and illuminates the warning light. You need special equipment to "interrogate" the ECU and ABS ECU for valuable intelligence info. They don't get into much other detail but they mention checking fluid level, ABS fuse, ABS relay, and a scrupulous inspection of all related electrical connectors. It also says to check the "earthing point on the side of the hydraulic unit." Shame on you Dave.
