I think it has to be the clutch. It's a manual transmission, so if the rpm surges and the car's speed doesn't, then the clutch is slipping. It's just a matter of why.
Looking back at some emails, a couple of weeks ago, I noticed it surged a little bit under moderate/light acceleration a couple of times. Now, it surged under moderate/heavy acceleration. So, I wonder if some debris or oil got onto the flywheel disk and is being worn off, back to its normal state.
It did start a couple of hundred miles after I added some fairly strong fuel injector cleaner (Berryman B-12), althogh I don't know how anything it cleaned would get to the flywheel. I'll check the dipstick tonight to see if it's leaking oil (I haven't noticed any oil stains on my garage floor, though).
