It’s possible you have a lemon, but instead of dwelling on that, find a top-flight independent Saab mechanic in your area and get a comprehensive stem-to-stern post-purchase inspection. This will run about $150, depending on where it’s done. Bring as much of the written service history you can lay your hands upon; even a Carfax report can be helpful. Disclose everything you know; leaving the car overnight for a hot and cold start engine road test is also advisable. The car needs to go on a rack for a good look underneath and a full Tech2 code scan. Has the car been driven in a salt-belt state? Ask him for an itemized written estimate of everything that needs to be done to bring it up to a level of reliability and performance you will be comfortable with, based upon your anticipated usage. The goal should be a planned road to recovery that defines what needs to be done now vs. what may be deferred and what you can DIY. Then you can make an informed financial decision whether to commit to this car or look for another.
As a point of reference, keep looking online for other 9-5 wagons, not so much to make an impulse purchase as to get a feel for the market price vs. car condition numbers so you can ballpark the cost to replace.
There is a directory of recommended Saab mechanics on this site, listed by state, that is a good resource. It would be helpful if you could post where you live with respect to the closest major city within a few hours’ drive. Others could then chime in with referrals. Good luck, wagons are harder to find than sedans!
