To test if the blend door shaft is broken beyond the collar area, (view in pic in your original post) you can just manually turn the blend door shaft (with car running) to see if the respective vents blow hot, cold , or a mix....
To do this you just simply turn the lever arm from one direction stop to the other stop. just fyi, 100% closed position I beleive is 100% air co. 100% open position is 100% HEAT. in between is the "blend"
I failed to notes that if you are in insufferable heat wave and your vents are blowing only all heat, you can set it manually to full air co cold air by doing this, and just simply leaving the stepper motor disconnected.
this saved my bacon while i figured everything out, This applies also for getting heat in cold weather.
FYI, the passenger side (US) blend door handles air for the passenger side and the rear vents
the driver side controls driver side.
