Hey guys. I need some of your expert advice! I’m a 25+ year SAAB driver. I recently bought a 2002 9-5 Aero. The car is in really good shape and I have every repair receipt since new. Yesterday, I took it to a very well respected independent SAAB mechanic. It inspected very well, with the exception of an oil leak at the timing cover. He showed me one that he had on the shelf, and showed me, what he believes, a design flaw, that 2 of the bolt holes were farther apart than the others, where oil leaks can occur. He showed me up under my car that’s indeed where it was leaking. It is his feeling that it can happen much more often due to using synthetic oil, due to it’s much more viscous nature. He recommends Castrol 10/30 mineral oil, and said that that may very well slow or stop the leak. I have been using synthetic (Redline) for many years with great results. He said that the B235R was designed to use mineral oil. It was almost shocking for me to hear. Do you guys have an opinion about this? Thanks…
