This is a fascinating subject.
Somehow I've been spared any such leakage, until this year and surprisingly, on a 2006 with the newer PCV system.
The leakage started when the only quality motor oil I had on hand to do a change, was 0W20. A switch to 5W30 within several hundred miles was not enough to stop the flow, once it started. 10W40 Synth Valvoline was better; still not acceptable.
Now, please read this knowing this car has almost 200,000 miles on it, and is used Down South and making trips across to California AND this car is for road trips, not doing cold weather errands. Two other 9-5s get most of the use in winter. So sludge is not that likely anyway. But I am 1,200 miles into a oil fill up with 15W50 Napa Full Synth (by the makers of Valvoline) and the leakage is way down. And I think will be contained once the last bits of the lighter fluids work their way out of the system.
I might go back to 10W40 before the weather gets cold. Of course if you don't pile on miles fast, you'd probably end up wasting quality oil. Not making any recommendations, just offering my viewpoint. Yes, I'll completely overhaul the PCV system on this 2006. I'll let you know what I find, then.
