I've used RTV around the perimeter of the water pump. Had the O-ring seep before so RTV seemed to solve the issue. Here's what happened to me - Installed a Gates water pump. 5 months later, the seal and bearing fails. Ordered a German branded pump (HEPU) and it failed in 8 months. Installed another Gate pump and yes - it failed. What I found out is the thermostat wouldn't let the air bleed out when I filled system with coolant. No jiggle pin. So I was ruining the new pumps because initially, they were running dry on start-up eating up the seal. So as a last resort, I found an OEM pump from Great Britain. Installed it, took out the thermostat and added coolant until it filled the engine to the level of the thermostat area. Then installed the thermostat and buttoned it up. Pump has been holding up well. I found another G.B. pump on Ebay so bought it for a spare. The OEM's are really well made. I've looked high and low for a thermostat with a jiggle pin. No luck. I really thought about drilling a small hole in the thermostat and making my own jiggle pin. The Chinese pumps may have been OK but running them dry will destroy any pump. Hope this doesn't happen to you.
