Roger, I've tried a 9mm hex this weekend and that just rounded the plug further. The pliers I googled are Vampliers and come in different lengths but as you well know getting a good grip from above is difficult. Heat is not an option. Almost considering just draining and finding a pump to fill from drain plug.
