The vintage of 9-5 that you and I own do not have dipsticks but the WIS still identifies the proper oil level within the case when properly filled. You can use an old-time carpenter's rule, the folding wooden kind with sliding brass tang for gaging hole depth, or even a small diameter long machine screw with a large washer on top to slip into the open hole on the transmission case, then extract to measure the oil position below the edge of the case hole.
I can't remember the proper distance off the top of my head but, and I won't guess, but it is identified in the WIS. SAAB actually sold a special tool to do this function, as did OTC, Kent-Moore, SPX, etc.
EDIT: I found an old post of mine with the distances given.
