> engine is cold or hot, so it's not the CPS
The fact that the symptom occurs when hot and cold is not conclusive evidence that the CPS is OK. It's true that the *common* failure mode of the CPS is a "hot crank but no start' but that is not the only failure mode. I don't know if the CPS is the culprit here but I'd say it's not exonerated just yet.
I'd also consider:
- battery cable: Take a good hard look at the positive batt cable (corrosion taht starts at eh terminal and creeps up the strands under the insulation is common)
- fuel pump. At 60K it's not likely that the fuel pump is the culprit, but ... the fuel pump usually gives some subtle hints that it's nearing it's end of life, and this is one of the symptoms. Of course the actual EOL of the fuel pump is a bit more inconvenient. You could measure the fuel pressure at the rail just before startup to get an idea if its still strong and healthy.
I assume no CEL? If I were a betting man (I'm not) I'd bet on the battery cable as the primary suspect.
I'd also consider a new CPS, it's easy enough to "just try it" without too much invested if it turns out OK after all. if it's got more 60k miles on it its a good idea to change it out anyway.
