We had a set of the black bars on our second 9-5 wagon. After about 4 years on the car - we only really used the bars in the summer, to hold our Thule box - the locks on the bars became more or less "permanently" inop. That wagon suffered a catastrophic loss of coolant on the road; when we went to remove the bars, we could not get the locks to disengage. Tried everyting, all sorts of rust dissolvers such as PB Blaster, no joy.
We eventually got another set of (used) black bars for our next wagon. After this experience, I think I can safely say that the older-style bars need to have their moving parts (i.e., the lock mechanisms) lubricated on a regular basis. We also now remove the bars when winter sets in, just to play it safe.
