I've got 4 9-5s. An '01 Aero, an '04 Arc, an '04 Aero and an '06 base wagon. Three of those are over 200,000 miles now and the simple replacement of front suspension bits made an enormous difference. The '04 Aero is low miles and still factory stock suspension.
I don't mind working on these myself, and you only have to buy that spring compressor once. I did each vehicle in succession over the course of last year. Unless you get burned paying someone else to do the work and pay too much, I think you'll be very pleasantly surprised.
Yes, the '06 had held up the best and had less rear tire cupping than the older model 9-5s, but nevertheless I was very pleased, post work on this '06 wagon. Maybe the best thing about the '06 and newer ones is the soundness of the later subframe bushings.
Yes, these are Southern vehicles and yes, fewer potholes but all have seen extensive driving on gravel forest service roads. Before work on the 3 commenced, the '04 Aero handled radically better. Now they're more or less equivalent (I lowered the front suspension to Aero specs on the two non Aeros).
