Stumble at idle and starting issues

Hi Everyone. I have a problem with my 2005 linear wagon at 127k mls.
Sitting at idle today at a light in the pre-Christmas crush and the car stumbled for an instant and then recovered. Unique experience in this car. Very reliable until this.
I thought it seemed like fuel starvation or fuel quality so, seeing it was lowish on fuel, thought I would give the pump every chance I could and went 1 mile and filled it up.
Trouble is that then, after that, I sat in the gas station and it would not start at all.
It still seemed like a bad fuel or a fuel-pump issue seeing that it would turn over but not catch for a long time. Then it was as if the thing suddenly got some gas and I drove home.
But then the revs seemed higher at a new faster idle speed.
Nursed it home by keeping the revs up to prevent the drop and stumble - it was about two miles - and there it sits.
Fuel pump and throttle body are original. The former is my suspicion. I will be checking and cleaning the throttle body tomorrow in the light.
Do you have any theories? How can I check the operation of the fuel pump? It seemes to make a noise when I start. Is bad fuel even a possibility these days?
It has had an intermittent P0455 lately which, if it is a vac issue is not obvious in its origins as I have not been able to find it.
