Jeremy -
Following your comments, I took my 47K-and-scratching alternator to a rebuilder with a long local history. They installed new bearings front and rear along with a new OE Bosch brush regulator (BR) pack - it cost me $140, and it is SMOOOOOTH.
The prices I posted earlier for the BR packs were clearly not good deals. Paying only $40 above your parts estimate seemed very fair to me. The shop even offered me the choice of Bosch OE BR or a non-Bosch part if I wanted to save a few bucks. Both of my daughters are basically running cars with original alternators now - one alternator just had a 'vacation' and the other one got a new BR pack 4 years ago. They both want to drive their SAABs another 2 to 3 years, so I'm okay having a quality rebuilt alternator on the shelf.
Thanks for the advice.
