Thanks. This is beginning to bug me: I just replaced the brake light bulb in the same fixture 2 days ago. Now that bulb has stopped working, too. I haven't had time to pull the unit out again, but it sure sounds like some kind of contact problem. The connector that comes from the body is a female 4-pin, with the contacts embedded in a bit. I cleaned them out as best I could, put dielectric grease on them, cleaned the male pins on the socket assembly side, etc.
I'll have to test for voltage out of the connector (female) - but if I don't find 12v there, not sure what the next step might be. The entire connector and wiring harness assembly is only about 8 inches long, and goes into the body of the car via a rubber weatherproof ball-shaped thing. I don't expect to find an intact, corrosion-free replacement at the only local pick n' pull that has any relatively recent (the wagon is an '06) Saabs. I'd have to try cutting off the connector and seeing if there was any power to the wires themselves - something I don't want to do unless I have a replacement connector on hand to splice in.
