Why I didn't pull parts from it Posted by DnstrDan [Email] (#1361) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DnstrDan) on Tue, 7 Apr 2020 16:15:13 In Reply to: Re: Donated My 9-5 to Charity, AdamSAAB2kAero [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 7 Apr 2020 14:17:08 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The short answer is that I don't have extra room to warehouse bulky parts. I have a compact two-car garage, with three cars in service. Secondly, the car was at Anders' shop (40 miles away) and it wasn't convenient for me to drive back there to pull parts myself. I also did not make the decision to donate until much later when it became clear that it would never sell as-is. In retrospect, I could have pressured the agency (arscars.com to tell me straight out whether they intended to resell it at auction, or for salvage value, prior to picking up the car. If the latter, I might have pulled some of the smaller electronics units. (I would have liked to keep the Bobby Bright trick oil accumulator pan, but the cost to pull it would have exceeded its resale value.) Doors and window glass would have not been candidates to keep because they're too bulky (and I'm convinced that the pre-2000 9-5's had thicker sheet metal than the later models) and the headlamps are not interchangeable. I thought about pulling the battery, but again, did not want to bother with maintaining a trickle charge on it for several years going forward.
One observation I would like to share is that the great thinning of the 9-5 herd has begun. The next owners of 9-5's will likely be like-minded enthusiasts; the window for the everyday buyer looking for cheap transportation has passed. Only the "best of breed" will survive ten years from now; others will be scrapped. Look at the TSN Classifieds: those Aeros in excellent condition are snapped up quickly while the middling cars languish. This is probably no different than the fate of other car makes/models that pass into history.
In five years, the oldest surviving 9-5's will become "antiques".
