Tracking operating costs for high mileage cars can be depressing. I just looked at what I've spent on our 9-5 Aero Wagon over the past 9 years: $14,000 in parts and $5,900 in labor. It's got 210,000 miles on it. It has averaged $156 a month. The performance level per dollar however is where I see real value. I'm sure if we drove a Camry or an Accord over the same period it would have been considerably cheaper but neither of those cars exists as a wagon, and neither is as much fun to drive.
I'd like to sell (our donate) our 9-5 in a couple years but there's NOTHING like it that gives the same performance in that form factor. I'd consider a BMW e60 or MB e-Class wagon but the cost to operate either of those is too much. I guess we'll just cave and go for an SUV like EVERYONE else.
