I think your mechanic is wrong.
If the cat was bad you would get a high voltage like 1 volt reading on O2 sensor 2......NOT no reading. NO reading could be a bad ground which is what J16 error does.
These cats last forever. My 2000 aero has over 200,000 miles on the original cat. I have NEVER replaced a cat on a Saab 9-5 and I have owned many of them and most high mileage......and CA smog tests every 24 months.
1. Is this a Saab knowledgeable mechanic?
2. Did he troubleshooot with a Saab tech2 scanner?
3. How many Saab 9-5 cats has he replaced?
4. has he done a lot of Saab work?
5. what are the voltage readings on the 2 O2 sensors?
6. Has you mechanic heard of the J16 fix?
The O2 sensors really keep track of the cats. #1 would read high like .4 to 1 volts. This is before the cats.
#2 sensor reads after the cats. should be below .5 volts.
Tech 2 will tell you the EXACT VOLTAGES. Ask your mechanic what the vltages read. If he does not know, FIND A NEW MECHANIC.
Try the J16 fix.
