A few years ago when it looked like I'd have to replace my Saab 9000 I took a look at these and found I much preferred the idea of a 9-5 since I've worked with Saab's Triumph-derived engines for decades. My experience has been they can rack up high mileage and for the most part are reasonable for the shade-tree mechanic to work on.
The 9-3's GM Ecotec 4-cylinder is much more of an unknown quantity and I don't care for some of the design features I have seen, such as the water pump in the timing cover and driven off the balance shaft chain. (Replacing the water pump on a 9000, or a 9-5 which looks similar, is no picnic but it's not THAT bad.)
