As mentioned this is more a father son project and learning experience. In that regard this weekend was a total success! we had a ton of fun, learned a lot and got a lot of work done.
we removed the head and replaced it with our newly machined one. We also replaced all of the radiator and heater hoses as well as the alternator and waterpump. My 2 sons and I worked all day Sat and Sunday (we are all tired!) when we were done sunday it fired up on the first try!
we learned a lot, this is the first time I've removed a saab head. Removing it from the donor car taught us a good lesson about being mindful of the chain guides (we broke them on the donor but none on the recipient.)
The bad news is, as all of you suspected, that some noise persists! It noise is reduced a lot for sure but still noisey and I think that I can confirm that what remains is a knock. This is not a surprise to any of you, and honestly not to me either. We will continue this project. Anders noticed in the video that the sound appeared to have multiple contributors. based on the improvement now, the head was a definite contributor.
some new data:
1 - the stethoscope shows marked reduction in noise across the valve cover.
2 - stethoscope still shows loudest noise on the outboard #4 exhaust manifold stud
3 - compression test:
cold engine. values in PSI, first number is dry, second is with a squirt of oil
#1 - 180, 220
#2 - 175, 210
#3 - 190, 250
#4 - 180, 200
It takes some real experience to understand the source of the noise. Pros like Anders and Bernie (and plenty of others here) can tell by listening, looking and probing. Rookies like me can't!
We will be doing the lower end crank and main bearings next, should be much easier job! I am hoping to get away with not pulling the pistons. But we will do that if necessary.
I know it would have been smarter to pull this engine and do it all on the stand, but that option is not available.
