Running through the gears have no effect on the switch when this heat problem occurs because it is not at the sliding contacts the problem lies. It is where the wire harness is soldered to the circuit board (embedded in epoxy), where the solder joints crack and opens up under heat.
If you still hear a faint click from the starter solenoid, it might actually be the positive cable or starter but if there is no sound at all from the solenoid, I suspect something else.
