Thanks Roger.
Tools Required:
>Confidence to work with brittle plastics that cost US$100 to replace from EBay
>T10 torx bit screwdriver, preferably with magnetic holder so screw doesn't accidentally fall into La La Land
W5W mini bulb like a LongLife Sylvania 2825 12V, 5 Watt (white not amber). I think the T194 bulb, which may fit is about 4.5 Watts (why take a chance - you might end up at a foggy T intersection with a gasoline tanker bumper tailing you.)
Beer Rating - one beer
Wine Rating - 1.5 oz
Bonus Points - Show your loved one Page 217 of the owner's manual where it recommends a trip to an authorized Saab dealer to replace these bulbs. Tell them you will be saving a nice chunk of money while they are out. Ask them to get you your favourite take-out or beveraggio on the way home.
Detailed procedure:
1. Raise the hood (aka good)
2. Find your reading glasses if you are the original owner (likely a middle-aged professor from an Ivy League North East U.S. school). Look at the back of the ones on EBay to see what you are dealing with.
3. Remove the mini torx screw visible on the top. Use some penetrating oil or WD40 if stiff but it screws into plastic. Place this screw on a magnetic tray so you won't loose it.
4. Handsomely remove the marker lens by pushing the rear section gently to the outside and rearward at the same time - hope for the best. There is a plastic hook molded into the lens that hooks onto the baseplate underneath the lens. The lens should/could/might come out intact. Examine for damage. You can compare yours to the really expensive ones on EBay to check.
5. Try to remove the red tab on the wiring harness to the bulk holder until you realize that you can just turn the bulbholder and attached harness until the bulb and assembly come out.
6. Wiggle the bulb and then try the lights again. You might just have a bad contact.
7. If burned out, pull the bulb out and replace with a 5W bulb as mentioned earlier. Check to see if it works. Use a long life version since the lens may break the next time someone removes it. They may have to use duct tape to hold it into place next time.
8. Take the opportunity to rustproof the near inner part of the quarter panel if you operate in the rust belt.
9. The forward tip of the quarter panel often corrodes in the rust belt. You can use this as an opportunity to repair the mini corrosion spot. Since our 9-5 is graphite colour, I just smear on a Q-tip of silver anti-seize to seal the area since I am lazy.
10. Examine the lens and note how the chrome foil surround is bubbling like the other 2006-9 vehicles in your area.
11. Installation is reverse of removal. It helps to press the lens in at the front to facilitate the front hook sliding into it's retention slot. Don't force anything. Be nice to your sentient being 9-5 and it will be nice to you.
12. The end.
