Odd headlight failure

I have an '04 Arc, with xenon headlights. Tonight, the left one flickered and failed, then moments later, the right one did, without flickering. I restarted the car and both came back on. A couple minutes later, the left one failed again, but the right one stayed on. I restarted and both lit up. A few more minutes later, the *right* one failed and the left stayed on.
The left headlight is original, and it doesn't go up/down anymore; the right was recently replaced with a used unit in nice shape: no UV degradation, functions properly.
None of this seems related to a loose connection: I drove several miles on a road reconstruction project that's super bumpy, and nothing happened.
Automotively speaking, I'm kinda stuck in the '80s: I've done tons of work on c900s I've owned for years. But this 9-5 is a bit inscrutable to me, and I've not seen this kind of electrical weirdness before, so I'd be grateful for any insight.
