You've gotten 145K out of the starter motor - you could think about replacing the starter motor as long as it must come out.
Be aware that the nut you use to tighten and loosen the sending unit, can be of more than one size AND you may have to improvise something in the way of an elongated socket with a slot ground into the side of it. You've got to look after the new lead and its coupling. 22 mm, is one popular size there.
