Security, if you unlock your doors from a great distance, someone could jump into your car and be waiting for you when you finally arrive. That's also why the drivers door unlocks separately from the other three. Also, if you have a longer range and you press the remote by mistake, you won't know that you inadvertently locked/unlocked your car, because you are too far away to hear the chirps. My '95 9000CS had a fantastic range with a separate tear-drop shaped remote with only two buttons. I still have to look at my new one to figure out which button to push.
