Receiver antenna placement/Gaussian cage?

Others have said the receiver antenna is located DOWN in the car, between the seats. Low held transmitter would have straight line transmission to the metal sides of the vehicle. The glass is heat absorbing, allegedly absorbing some of radio waves as well, at least according to the folks who manage the EZ Pass systems. So, if either the receiver antenna is located in a brain dead location or we have a total gaussian cage with the glass absorbing some of the signal, then an antenna located outside of the cage would seem to be an answer. How about they place it in the shark fin?
Does anyone know anything about the actual antenna placement or the actual characteristics of the heat absorbing glass?
