That is a great write-up. I had actually read it during this project and found it very helpful. Other readers DIY-ing a replacement radio/stereo/head unit should take note of it!

I am a bit sheepish to admit the cause of my non-working speakers: they don't exist. Behind the prominently displayed Harmon Kardon logo on what I thought were the rear shelf speaker covers, there is nothing but air. At least I discovered this before I started digging for the amp to find out what the problem was! Sheesh.

I was able to find a very nice fascia surround panel from Dynamic Sounds in the UK, of all places. These surrounds are pretty hard to come by so I was glad to pay $13 to have it shipped.
