I went to start my car today, and it started to turn over. I let go of the key, and it didn't quite complete the start cycle. Tried again, but instead of turning over, it made a high pitched, almost grinding sound. If so, is this the sign of a starter motor going bad? Is there a trick to get it started one more time? I'm about 50 miles from a repair shop.
I don't think this is related, but just in case, this is what was going on just prior to this event. I was in the process of replacing the TWICE module; had the module swapped out, and waiting for the guy who was going to help me program the new one. He had to cancel, so I put the old TWICE module back in. This is when I tried to start the car. I think this is pure coincidence, because I get no error message when putting the key in, all the other remote functions work, and I think if it was going to disable the car it wouldn't be in the manner I'm seeing; as I said, it sounds like the starter motor is turning, but the gear isn't engaging. The battery is pretty low, but even with a charger on it and in "start engine" mode, it does the same thing. Normally it won't be able to turn over with an extremely low battery, and jumping it with a charger gets it going easily. On the charger now, drawing the max 25A, which is a bit odd.
Edit: Came back from dinner, battery fully charged. Upon listening again, it's not a grinding, more like wheezing. Fuel pump?
