"In the old days" the "Christmas tree" was an indication of a failed ABS module. That was when these cars were new/newish. THat lead most of us (me included) to believe that the "christmas tree" was legit diagnostic info.
it is not.
the christmas tree simply means that there is an ABS fault, it could be anything. You'll need access to a Tech 2 and find out what the actual code is. The Tech 2 is the only way I know of that can read the ABS codes. And the code is the first step in diagnosing. (Some report that an OpComm or high end generic scanners also read these codes)
FWIW I had the same symptoms as you ... replaced the ABS module and no improvement. For me it turned out to be high resistance in the wire to the right rear ABS wheel sensor.
FWIW I believe that when these cars were new the most likely failure was the module itself. But as they age, other problems crop up, like brake switch, tone ring, failed wheel sensors and failing junctions (j108-j111)
without a Tech 2 it would be wise to check:
1 - check or replace the brake switch
2 - visually inspect the tone rings on the front wheels.
3 - check (and consider rebuilding) the junctions (j108-j111) under the carpet, under the back seat, left side. these crimp connections tend to corrode.
4 - check the static resistance of each wheel sensor. IT should be 1000ohms
if all of this checks out, you will need to get the code.
