Before we discuss the relative merits of running low octane fuel in our cars that were engineered to run on high octane fuel can we mention the benefits of conservation to both the fuel supply and our wallets? Are we idling our cars unnecessarily just so we can get into a warmed or air conditioned car? Are we driving unnecessarily fast just to get somewhere a minute sooner? Remember from physics class that wind resistance increases exponentially with speed. As much as we love to drive our SAABs, are we driving short distances when we could walk and benefit our health as well? Are we keeping our tires properly inflated to maximize miles per gallon? And what about that junk we haul around in the trunk that costs us money every time we drive? I’ve heard several short sighted politicians support reducing fuel taxes, but they never mention how they intend to pay for roads with less revenue. NJ had a bill introduced to reduce the gas tax from something like 43 cents per gallon to 14. NJ has a highway trust fund that is nearly $1 trillion in debt and that debt can’t be serviced by drastically reducing revenue. That will only result in a lower bond rating and increased borrowing costs in the future. Some of you may recall the 1970’s when we reduced the national speed limit to 55 to get us out of the grip of the Mideast oil cartel, and it worked. The best way to reduce the price of any commodity is to reduce demand.
