Running lower octane fuel reduces performance, but it does not reduce fuel efficiency. Lower octane fuel actually has more energy per unit volume than higher octane fuel. I'm not suggesting that means 87 actually gets more MPG than 89 or 91, but there's no reason to think that it gets less. I've done a lot of comparison tanks between 87, 91 and 94 octane gas. The difference was not statistically significant, in other words could not be distinguished from other variables.
