Having just leased (though I did negotiate as if I were buying it first) a 2001 9-5 SE Wagon last Tuesday, first, the sticker on the car you are considering seems too low. That is the same equipment offered on the lease that has the wagon going for 38K+. As I had a 9-3 to trade, I got Saab loyalty incentives and other things and my new car had a sticker of $40,540.00-laser red is not an extra cost metallic paint color. I usually trade cars every three years or less and have found that you either get a good deal on the car you are buying or a good deal on the trade, but rarely both. As I hate to try to sell my car myself, I am willing to lose a little in the trade to avoid the hassle. We also have a '98 Ford Ranger that we special ordered (for color and option combo that we could never find on the lot) and we paid $300 over invoice for it-but there was about $5.000 difference between invoice and MSRP. I know this hasn't really answered your question, but I am merely relating my experience. I think you can always offer what you want to pay and see if they will accept it-a lot depends on how many cars they've sold this month, etc.-something you have no way of knowing. In my latest Saab deal, I did find that playing one dealer against the other helped, but then you have to live somewhere where there are multiple dealers.
