It was the turbo hose. The hose clamp rusted right through. The guy at the shop also diagnosed it sight unseen. I had this same thing happen to me 25 years ago with my '88 9000, but the symptoms were quite different. I just had no boost, otherwise the car ran fine. The computer is now "smart" enough to make the car undriveable when this happens. Progress, I guess.
By sheer coincidence, this repair shop out in the middle of nowhere just happened to be a Volvo specialist, and he'd seen some Saabs before. The 6km tow cost almost three times as much as the repair.
