Oil Drain Plug Gasket? Posted by Chip Fichot [Email] (#2597) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Chip Fichot) on Thu, 1 Sep 2022 10:35:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I changed my oil last weekend and before I got it down off the ramps after running for a few minutes, I saw no leaks.
Left it in the garage and noticed fresh drips the next day - from what I can tell without getting it back on the ramps, it's coming from the drain plug.
There were no leaks prior so I'm hoping it's just that I didn't tighten the plug enough.
I didn't change the washer (not sure if that's considered 'best practice?') so I was going to order a new one on the chance that might solve the issue if tightening up the plug doesn't fix it.
But then I noticed that there are 'gaskets' for the plug also. There was not one on there the previous time I changed the oil (prior to that it was changed twice under my ownership by 2 different Saab indys). My Haynes manual doesn't mention a gasket, only the washer.
I know it couldn't hurt to install a gasket (and they aren't costly); would appreciate others' opinions on their usefulness, etc.
Also, if I did install it, I'm assuming it would be installed between the washer and the pan (as opposed to between the washer and the head of the drain plug)?
