Steven, I think you are right about certain applications for remote starters. Case in point: I live in Buffalo. And yes, modern amenities like the ones you mention are welcome.
I guess my earlier retraction was simply because I never understood quite how involved a 9-5 remote starter installation would be. My last walk through a Wal-Mart aisle revealed a remote starter for about $80--the last time I looked a few years back, they were $200+. That's the sole reason I pondered that solution versus a $150+ Saab transmitter key.
In any case, I wonder if you've ever considered an engine block heater for your cold climate Saab (assuming it's in/near a garage and power source). My Canadian-issed '01 featured that item as standard and I'm eager to try it out this winter. I'd rather have a warm engine than a smoked up garage/yard and have already researched a high-current electronic timer to take care of the switch-on time. As long as I remember to unplug the cord. . . .
