Not charging, no warning light Posted by bobc [Email] (#473) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bobc) on Mon, 5 Dec 2022 20:45:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The patient is a 1999 base model, and the trouble started when I tried to start the car a week ago. the 4.5 yr old battery simply didn't have enough juice to start the car. I assumed the battery had simply lived its life. The batt was an interstate, and at 4.5 years old was about as good as I get from batteries in my 9-5s.
oh and previous days there was no charge warning light illuminated. so i assumed I needed a new battery. Which I got and installed. Within 2 days the battery was dead again. This time I was a little more diligent, I checked and it seems that the alternator is not charging (much). With the car running at 1500rpm or so I get ~13.1 volts at the battery terminal.
Also confirmed that the bulb is good, it lights with the key "on" and engine off. Also confirmed that there is no phantom current leak. SO it's alternator time for me.
But Im wondering, why didnt the charge warning light illuminate? If it had I would have had some advance warning rather than waking up to a no start scenario. And looking back through my records, the same thing happened on a different car about 10 years ago: the alternator died but never gave a warning light.
