Earlier this year, my '04 9-5 Aero wagon suffered a breakdown (sudden dramatic drop of engine power) near the end of a 40-mile commute. Fortunately, I was able to make it to the office in limp-home mode after exiting the freeway. I had the car transported by flatbed truck to SWEDECAR and after troubleshooting was subsequently informed that the pre-cat core had broken up and partially plugged the exhaust.
There are no California Air Resources Board (CARB) compliant catalytic converters for the 2004 model in the Saab/Orio parts system. The 5466289 (→ 88800004) are non-CARB and backordered, while the 4965877 (for '98 - '99) is CARB-compliant and backordered. The front and rear converters are not sold separately.
With my biannual emissions test only months away, the only solution was to fabricate a CARB-compliant front and rear three-way converter (TWC) solution. Anders worked with a subcontractor muffler shop to repurpose an intermediate exhaust flex pipe from a '99 9-5 with two aftermarket TWCs welded in-place. An O2 sensor bung was also welded to an orifice on the straight pipe between the front and rear cats to accept oxygen sensor #2. See photos below. The laser-engraved "D-562-76" is the CARB executive order #, and the vendor (Valina) part numbers are 207030 (front) and 208030 (rear). I think that Anders did a really nice job.
Last month, my car successfully passed the emissions test with no error codes. Yay! I was subsequently able to update my vehicle's registration with no problems.
Here is the link to the database of approved cats. There are pick-lists for narrowing the search to the applicable SAAB car of your choice.CARB Aftermarket Catalytic Converter Database
