jack up passenger side of the car, jack stands, check secure.
Dont disconnect the alternator, it needs a load (your battery is the load) and will be damaged if it is running with no load
start the car
grab your DVM, set it to DC volts.
wiggle underneath looking at the back of the alternator (easier said than done).
Place the red probe of your meter on the "B+" terminal (or "Batt" or "B" ... different alts use different labels. It's the bigger red wire lug). Place the black probe on any ground ... frame, engine block, etc.
alligator clips on your probes will help.
that will measure the voltage at the alternator ... you can then compare that to the voltage at the batt.
However if you are just interested in the voltage drop between the alternator and the battery over the battery cable, no need to start the car ... just measure the voltage at the alternator lug, and at the battery.
