... my experience was that the performance of the '99 air conditioning system was average but never excellent. Even after I replaced literally every component in the system except for the coolant lines and condenser, I've empirically found that the cooling performance of both of my 2004 cars has been noticeably better. The cooling performance (BTU/hr or W) is not something that automakers typically publish, but given the difference in engine power (170 hp vs. 250 hp), it stands to reason that trades were made to provide acceptable performance at the wheels.
So aside from heat removal, the other factor one can play with is heat rejection. Window tinting and a lighter paint color, and if possible strategically keeping the car out of a full-sun heat soak condition when parked. My wagon is white, tinted, and covered on hot days whenever practicable.
