Hi Bernie,
Thank you for your response.
1. The sound pitch does change with fan speed.
2. The econ button does not change the sounds. However, the fan noise is louder with the recirculate button on.
3. All vacuum lines are connected as best as I can tell. I replaced all with silicone a while back and they're in good condition. One vacuum line disconnected while I was replacing the radiator hose but I put it back.
4. Heater core pipes: only the right pipe was hot, the left was cold when the car got to temperature.
I have a Tech 2, so I turned off and on all air control components listed. That did something. I heard coolant move around and the left heater core pipe went from cold to warm/hot along with the hot right pipe. I also got some heat from the vent, but not hot heat. I also noticed that the coolant in the reservoir dipped, so coolant made it somewhere it hadn't before I tested things with the Tech2.
The fan sounds with pitch changing with fan speed remains. After driving it around, the sound is not more noticeable at low fan speeds.
There is not heat after driving around, so it looks like I was low on coolant. A/C is not as cold as usual but works.
Is there a way to diagnose the problem definitively with the tech 2? I have a replacement bypass valve, but I do not want to dump my new coolant to replace it unless I know for sure.
