The springs are very tight. I had the same challenge last year where my old lens and base separated so had to replace.
The trick is to get the forward (tapered edge in first) push it forward hard and then snap the back edge in, making sure the spring engages. It’s harder than you might think, and made worse by trying to grip the small dimension of the lens.
Short answer is yes, the spring compresses but by pushing the unit forward to compress one side and get just enough clearance to push the lack edge on.
The new unit is tougher than the deteriorated seals in the old.
