revmoving stripped bolt from fuel tank strap Posted by TML [Email] (#2212) [Profile/Gallery] (more from TML) on Sat, 17 Feb 2024 15:16:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I need to replace the fuel tank straps. These actually broke while I was driving, luckily only about a mile from my home. I've removed one, and have another one successfully started, but the first one I tried has a stripped head. I don't know if I did it, but it seemed to give out extremely easily, to the point that I wondered if I had the right socket size. Once I got another one out, I confirmed it's a 10mm.
Anyone have any bright ideas how to remove this stripped bolt? Access is pretty poor. The only thing I can think of is trying to drill a hole in the centre and then using a Lisle "super-out. But I'm not even sure I can get in there with a drill bit. And then if I get that far, I'm not sure the super-out will hold up. The other bolt I removed was very rusted and took a lot of torque, not only to get started but all the way until the last couple of threads. Maybe it would be possible to weld a bigger nut onto the head, but that's not something I'm set up to do. The car's in a snow covered, gravel parking pad, over 100m away from a 240V outlet.
If I can't come up with something, I guess I'll put one strap on and then drive it slowly to the nearest shop, hoping that they are clever enough to solve the problem. I don't want to spend too much on this car, as it only has about 6 months of life left.
