Do I understand correctly that you are seeing white, not black, smoke coming from the engine bay? From the front of the engine, the side with pulleys ... do I have that right?

And a scraping/scratching noise?

These symptoms are consistent with a failing water pump, specifically the water pump bearing.

The scraping sound is the water pump pulley scraping against the timing cover. The white smoke is coolant leaking from the seal at the bearing and dripping onto hot parts of the engine/exhaust. Keep in mind that if this continues, the water pump pulley will chew right through the timing cover.
