I tend to agree it could be just the compressor if it has seized, and the belt is trying to rotate around a frozen pulley. That said, I would expect you would have heard the belt screaming along with the smoke. Make sure your Indy knows what he is looking at.
Your comment about “just topped up” is troubling to me. The variable displacement compressors in the 9-5s are very sensitive to under and over filling, with either condition impacting performance to the point of non-function. To properly service the refrigerant level, you need to have the system evacuated, and then the correct amount of refrigerant installed (875g/1.9 lbs or 825g/1.8lbs) depending on the label under the hood. The machine they use can tell you how much refrigerant was recovered versus how much went in, and it really is the only way to know if the system is fully charged.
Just my recent experience….. Saturday, we had a high 60-s and very sunny day, and my car wanted to go to a/c - but blew warm. I saw that the compressor was spinning freely but hadn’t engaged. I put a small amount of R-134 in using a can I had around, and the compressor kicked on, so I knew it was just low pressure and the compressor was good. I took it to a quick oil change place (Valvoline) who I know had the right equipment - they extracted about 6 oz, and put in 1.8lbs. I will monitor it and do a more comprehensive service and leak search if necessary (I know of a pinhole in the evaporator that requires a recharge every few years - and was due. Cheaper at this rate than replacing the evaporator given mileage and age of car).
