Saab 9 5 2002 — 2005 AC Expansion Valve Clamp 2 Saabers Like This Post! Posted by Donegalkid [Email] (#3008) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Donegalkid) on Sun, 17 Mar 2024 06:47:26 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In restoring second generation 9 5s, or replacing AC systems, you may encounter difficulties removing the AC expansion valve from the firewall. There are numerous posts on that topic. A related matter — the expansion valve uses two 55mm H5 (hex head) .8 thread bolts to connect to the evaporator behind the firewall. It is situated under the wipers and cowling and also accessible via the passenger (US) footwell after removing the glove box, transmission module and bracket, etc. (The evaporator sits in front in front of the heater core in its own compartment). The problem many mechanics encounter is that the two bolts attaching the valve to the evaporator through the firewall corrode within the bracket, or at the protruding ends of the bolts; both circumstances that are hidden to plain view behind the expansion valve. Many are corroded in place — stuck in the bracket — and necessitate cutting the evaporator from inside the evaporator box from the expansion valve bracket and the valve body itself. Then, of course, you have to replace the small bracket since it is likely destroyed in the removal process or has two frozen bolts locked into it. Problematical is that the bracket is a very scarce part these days. Good luck finding one in parts suppliers, or from secondhand sources using Saab part numbers. Reusable used parts are out there but hard to find. After researching the part, I learned that Valeo made the original part with a code of 838033B. Again, hard to find, with Saab or Valeo part numbers. Fortunately, and coincidentally, certain models of Volkswagens also require that same bracket for anchoring the ac expansion valve. The VW part number is 336563962 and it is indeed the original Valeo part with the Valeo number also stamped on it — identical to what you find in the Saabs. Best wishes; this part is likely out of production but VW has a supply at least for awhile, here in March 2024.
